Intro
Bring color to your havdalah ceremony with a hand painted spice box, a small wooden case alive with blue, gold and leaf green. A bird perches among flowering vines, an oriental scene that carries the feel of old Jerusalem. The vines and blossoms evoke renewal, a gentle note on which to begin the week. Designed by Jerusalem artist Yair Emanuel, whose work has graced Jewish homes for over two decades.
Build and Use
Made of hand painted wood, the spice box measures about 2 x 2 x 1 inches. The lid is pierced with small holes so the scent of the besamim reaches the air, and the compact body holds a spoonful of cloves or other spices. Light and easy to hold, it sits comfortably in the palm during the havdalah ceremony.
Gift Ideas
Small and richly colored, the spice box makes a natural wedding, engagement or housewarming gift. It suits a bar or bat mitzvah just as well, or a gift for a couple setting up a Jewish home. The compact size also tucks easily into a gift basket or a holiday package.
Care Instructions
Wipe the spice box gently with a soft, dry cloth. Keep it away from water and damp, which can lift the paint from the wood. Store it somewhere dry, and refill the spices as their fragrance fades.
