Intro

Dress your Shabbat hot plate in color with an embroidered plata cover, a patchwork of red, blue and green panels. A pomegranate border frames the Shabbat Shalom greeting at the center, the fruit standing for blessing and abundance. The plata cover drapes over the hot plate and the food resting on it. Designed by Jerusalem artist Yair Emanuel, whose work has graced Jewish homes for over two decades.

Build and Use

Cut from fabric in colorblocked panels, the cover measures 31.5 by 26 inches, sized to drape over a plata rather than a challah. The pomegranates, leaves and blue lettering are embroidered onto a cream panel at the center. It weighs about 13 ounces, light enough to lift on and off with ease. Set on the plata before Shabbat, it brings color to the kitchen counter or sideboard.

Gift Ideas

A plata cover makes a thoughtful housewarming or wedding gift for anyone setting up a Jewish home. It suits an engagement or an anniversary as well, and a bar or bat mitzvah family hosting for Shabbat. The bright panels make it a warm choice for a first Shabbat in a new home.

Care Instructions

Spot clean the cover with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let it air dry flat. Keep it away from direct flame and avoid harsh cleaners so the embroidery and colors stay bright.
