The plata cover rests over the hot plate, covering the food kept warm on it. At its center, birds stand among flowering vines in an embroidered paper cut out design, framing the Hebrew words that call Shabbat a delight, while the vines suggest growth and renewal. Designed by Jerusalem artist Yair Emanuel, whose work has graced Jewish homes for over two decades.

Build and Use

Made of fabric in gold and olive patchwork panels, the plata cover measures 31.5 by 26 inches and weighs about 0.84 pounds. The cream center panel carries machine worked embroidery in gold and brown thread. Sized to drape over a plata, it is cut for the hot plate and not for a challah or the Shabbat table. The light fabric folds flat for storage between weeks.

Gift Ideas

Warm gold tones make the plata cover a thoughtful housewarming gift for a family setting up its first Shabbat kitchen. It suits a wedding or engagement just as well, alongside other Judaica for a new Jewish home. It also marks a bar or bat mitzvah or an anniversary with something used every week.

Care Instructions

Spot clean the fabric gently with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Keep the cover clear of direct flame and avoid soaking it so the embroidery stays crisp. Fold it flat or hang it when not in use.
